Lifelong Development

Below is a list of Lifelong Development outreach projects Nativity is involved in. Click on each of the projects for more detail.

Haiti Reforestation Partnership (CODEP)

Haiti Reforestation Partnership  partners with  the CODEP (Comprehensive Development Project) to plant trees in the Leogane province of Haiti.  It is internationally recognized for its 30 years of work in the community, with over 14 million trees planted. This effort has changed lives in these rural mountainous communities for over a generation – providing stabilized mountainsides, space for agriculture, community schools, and increased economic opportunity. One Nativity parishioner serves on the board and Nativity contributes financially to this organization on a yearly basis. CODEP can always use money for tools, fertilizer, and small stipends for the 750 community workers that plant with the program. There is no practical limit on the trees that can be planted, only resources! It costs $1 to plant a tree and protect it over five years until it is mature. If you are interested in learning more, Email Becky Showalter, who is on the board.

US-Uganda Orphans Education Fund

US-Uganda Orphans Education FundSeveral years ago, The Rt. Rev. Samuel Kamya, then Anglican Bishop of West Buganda in the nation of Uganda and brother of one of our parishioners, visited Church of the Nativity and called our attention to the needs of his war-torn, HIV-ridden nation, and asked that we provide funds to educate Ugandan girls who are orphaned and poor. This ministry continues as an independent 501-c3 entity, the US-Uganda Orphans Education Fund; several members of Nativity are on its Board of Directors. To learn more about this project, Email Barbara Kamya.

Episcopal Campus Ministry

Episcopal Campus Ministry (ECM) is an opportunity for worship, spiritual reflection, Christian education, fellowship, pastoral and peer counseling, and service opportunities for the students and faculty of North Carolina State University, Meredith College, and Peace College.  Nativity members frequently serve on the Board of Directors and Nativity supports this organization on a yearly basis. For more information, Email Perry Schneider or Email Josh Booth.

Abukloi

In 2010 Angelo Maker, one of the “lost boys of Sudan,” undertook a project to provide secondary schooling to both men and women in his home town of Rumbeck in South Sudan. He called the project Abukloi, meaning “we can do it.” Nativity has supported this effort since near the beginning when Angelo shared his vision with the parish. In 2018, the school graduated its first class of 60 students and looks to expand the program to include a healthcare center. So it is safe to say, “we are doing it,” even against a very fragile national backdrop. For more information Email Carl Terry, or go to the Abukloi Website.
